Stakeholders concerned for withered implementation of RTI

KATHMANDU, May 31: Stakeholders have expressed sadness for no proper implementation of the right to information due to lack of public awareness and government´s apathy despite the prevalence of RTI laws and other necessary mechanism to bring it into force.



At an interaction jointly organized here by Citizen´s Campaign for Right to Information (CCRI) and Consumers´ Welfare Protection Forum –Nepal, participating speakers stressed that the consumers´ right to access to information should e brought to the mainstream. [break]



Chief Commissioner of the National Information Commission, Binaya Kasajoo said the public agencies should be accountable enough to guarantee the public right to information and enhance access to information held by different public bodies.



Director of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Bed Bhattarai underlined the need to make general public aware about the consumers´ education and rights.



CCRI Chairperson Taranath Dahal stressed the need to increase activism at implementation level to establish the right to information, making it clear that the true right to information is to impart clear information to people about the gods and services they are entitled to.



Forum Chairperson Jyoti Baniya voiced concern for the failure to implement the people´s right to access to information to goods and services despite the enactment of RTI long before.



On the occasion, Tanka Aryal and Dr. Gopal Prasad Dahal presented working papers on RTI and consumers´ rights.
