KATHMANDU, Aug 28: Sri Lanka has announced US$1 million in humanitarian assistance to Nepal to support relief efforts following devastating floods and landslides that have caused significant loss of life, displacement and destruction across the country.
According to a press release issued by Sri Lanka's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism on Thursday, President Anura Kumara Disanayaka directed the government to provide the financial assistance as a gesture of solidarity with the people of Nepal.

The President expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and suffering caused by the disasters and conveyed condolences from the Government and people of Sri Lanka to the Government and people of Nepal, particularly the families who have lost their loved ones, the release said.
Recalling the longstanding bonds of friendship and solidarity between Sri Lanka and Nepal, Disanayaka said Sri Lanka stands firmly with the Nepali people in their hour of need, according to the release.
The financial contribution will support immediate relief and humanitarian assistance to communities affected by the floods and landslides.
The release said Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath also spoke with his Nepali counterpart, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, earlier on Thursday, conveying Sri Lanka's condolences, support and solidarity with Nepal.
The Sri Lankan government will remain in close contact with the Government of Nepal and explore further avenues through which it can contribute to Nepal's relief and recovery efforts, according to the press release.
