“Though the members have been appointed politically, they will put forth their views independently,” said Pariyar while addressing a function at the Reporters´ Club in Kathamandu Thursday afternoon.
He said that the government and political parties should also create favorable environment for the members to carry out their duties independently.
When asked if the commission will submit its report to the government within the given timeframe of two months, Pariyar said, “We will try our best to submit the report on time. But if we fail, we hope that the government will extend the SRC term.”
He said the government would extend the term of the commission if the latter makes such a request with a genuine reason. “However, I can´t say if we need more time as we are still in the initial phase.” added Pariyar.
Stating that the commission would not delay the constitution writing process, Pariyar said, “Our work will not affect the constitution drafting process in any way.”
He said that the commission will recommend the government an appropriate model of federalism considering its cultural, political and economic viability.
Pariyar also said that the body will accommodate the suggestions from the state restructuring committee under the Constituent Assembly (CA) as well as from others.
When asked if the recommendations from SRC would be incorporated in the new statute, Pariyar said, “Our recommendations are meant for incorporation in the new statute. However, the CA will be the ultimate body to decide the issue.”
