KATHMANDU, April 26: The government has continued its drive, even on Sunday, to remove unauthorized structures and settlements built along riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley. The focus now is on areas left unfinished on Saturday.
Flooded Manohara River damages property worth Rs 7.5 million
Demolition of illegal structures in Thapathali and Gairigaun in Kathmandu has already been completed. However, efforts to clear the squatter settlement along the Manohara River in Bhaktapur were halted Saturday evening after some residents pelted stones at security personnel.
During the clash, 22 security personnel sustained minor injuries. Police said their condition is stable. As stone-pelting intensified from multiple sides, teams from the Armed Police Force (APF) and Nepal Police suspended the demolition work for the day.
Even before the operation began, around 80 percent of residents in the Manohara settlement had already moved their belongings elsewhere earlier in the day.
