SPORTS BRIEFS: Thapa clinches chess title

KATHMANDU, March 5: Uttamraj Thapa of Kantipur Chess Club on Saturday clinched the title of Nation-wide Open Rating Chess Tournament.



Thapa scored eight points in the ten-round event. Thapa defeated Herakaji Maharjan in the last round played Saturday. Niraj Niraula of Dhrubatara Sporting Club of Jhapa finished second with 7.5 points. [break]



He beat Rajan Puri. Despite accumulating equal 7.5 points, Nepal champions Badrilal Nepali came on third spot on the basis of progressive point. Nepali had shared points to FIDE Master Manish Hamal who secured fourth position while Punyaman Karmacharya came in fifth position.



Similarly, Prem Krishna Maharjan, Bikash Kuluju, Rajan Puri, Herakaji Maharjan and Bijendra Singh secured fifth to tents positions respectively. The top three players of the event bagged a purse of Rs 20,000, Rs 12,000 and Rs 8,000 respectively. The event was organized by Newa National Font.



Chitrakar wins KEGG golf


KATHMANDU: Gopal Chitrakar won the KEGG (golf) tournament played on Saturday at the Gokarna Forest Resort. Chitrakar collected 34 stableford points and edged past NPGA President Rabindra Man Shrestha by one stroke. Shrestha who scored 33 points finished ahead of Laxman Pun who secured third position after submitting a card of 31 points. The tournament was played under stableford format with 3/4 handicap. President of Gokarna Golf Club, Suhrid Ghimire gave away the prizes to the winners.



Kathmandu Academy, Lincoln victorious


KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Academy, Lincoln and British Gurkha Academy registered victories in the Fourth Benoz Memorial Inter-college Boys´ Basketball Tournament on Saturday. Kathmandu Academy defeated Bishwa Niketan 33-20 with 13 points from Rochak Shrestha in the match held at the court of Morgan International College. Roshan Neupane´s 12 points helped Lincoln overcome Sagarmatha 52-45. British Gurkha thrashed Swasti Sadan 34-16 riding on Uttam Kumar Thapa´s 12 points.



Newton lift volleyball title


KATHMANDU: Newton College lifted the title of First Manaslu Cup Inter-college Volleyball Tournament on Saturday. Newton registered a comfortable three sets victory over hosts Manaslu A in the final. The host gave a tough fight in the first two sets but were unable to get results in their favor as they were defeated 25-23, 26-24 and in the third set they were outplayed 25-16. In the third place playoff held at the hosts court New Baneshwar, Pasanga Lhamu beat Gita Mata 25-10, 25-11, 18-25, 25-19. Newton´s skipper Binu Thapa won the best player award. Similarly, Chinu Chhyantal, Krishna Sherchan of Newton won the best setter and spiker award respectively. Sher Bahadur Magar of Manaslu, Chandra Bahadur Sherpurja of Pasang Lhamu won the best server and defender award respectively.
