SPORTS BRIEFS: Tamang, Bartaula win race

KATHMANDU, Nov 11: Samiti Tamang of Palung and Devendra Bartaula of Daman won the title of Thaha Daud (race) in women´s and men´s section, respectively, at Palung, Makawanpur on Thursday.



Tamang finished the 3,000m race in 14.31 minutes to bag the title in women´s section while Kamala Bista and Sharmila Bista secured second and third positions. [break]



In the men´s section, Bartaula clocked 16 minutes to cover the 5,000m race. Tirtharam Bista and Rabi Bhujel finished second and third.



The race was organized in memory of the late Roopchandra Bista, the propounder of the ´Thaha´ movement.


Shrestha appointed acting member-secretary



Gita Shrestha, a member of National Sports Council (NSC), has been appointed as the acting member-secretary of NSC in the absence of incumbent Member-secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary.



On Thursday, Chaudhary left for Guangzhou, China to participate in the 16th Asian Games scheduled to begin Friday. Shrestha is the first woman to serve as acting member-secretary of NSC. She will work until Chaudhary returns from the Asiad.



Informatics upset Ace in Football Frenzy



Informatics-B upset Ace Institute of Management 2-0 on Thursday in the Toyota Football Frenzy 2010 inter-college five-a-side football tournament being held at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium. Ankit Rana Magar and Kiri Sherchan scored the goals for the winners.



In other matches of the day, Campion College, National College of Information Technology (NCIT) and Informatics-A triumphed in their respective matches. Kenny Rai of Campion netted a brace in a 2-0 win over National College of Management. A solo goal from Dipen Rai of NCIT ended the challenge of Asian College. Likewise, a lone goal by Siddhartha Chhetry of Informatics-A was enough to sink Little Angels´ College of Management (LACM) ´B´.



Meanwhile, IST College and LACM ´A´ played a 1-1 draw. Santosh Limbu gave the lead to IST in the first half, while Bhagyesh Chand scored the equalizer for LACM after the interval. The hosts Kathmandu College of Management settled for a goalless draw with College of Business Management.
