SPORTS BRIEFS: St Xavier's wins Fr Moran tourney

KATHMANDU, Dec 10: St Xavier´s lifted the 16th National Father Moran Memorial Invitational Football Tournament on Saturday defeating Armed Police Force School 3-0. Raj Kumar Tamang scored a brace while Mausham Shrestha scored another goal.



Pushpanjali finished in the third position defeating defending champion Little Angel´s 2-0. [break]Amik Sunar scored both the goals for the winning team. Birendra Buda of APF was adjudged "most promising player" while Manish Khanal of APF was named "best goalkeeper". Raj Kumar Tamang of St Xavier´s was awarded as highest goal scorer and best player of the tournament.



Teresa, KES win


KATHMANDU: Teresa Academy and Kathmandu English School (KES) registered wins Saturday in the second Deneb Inter School Basketball Tournament. Teresa thrashed Marvles 15-2 in the first match played at the court of Deneb. Bikash Karmacharya´s 12 points helped KES register 19-6 victory over Anupama.



The Excelsior teams in semifinals

KATHMANDU: Both the teams of The Excelsior on Saturday fixed their places in the semifinal of the Fourth Whitefield Valley-wide Inter School Basketball tournament in boys´ senior and junior categories. In the senior boys´ category The Excelsior thrashed Deneb by 35-15. Jenson Rana scored 20 points for the winning team. In the junior category, The Excelsior beat the host Whitefield 34-20 as Sairus Gurung scored 12 points.



In the other match of senior boys´ category, Siddhartha Vanasthali, Galaxy and Neric registered wins. Siddhartha defeated host Whitefield 50-39, Galaxy overcame Holy Garden 49-35 and Neric crushed North Point 35-26. In the junior boys´ section Angel´s Heart overcme Greenfield 24-18.



Mount Glory, TIA win basketball titles


KATHMANDU: Mount Glory and TIA lifted the titles of Second Tenda- AIA Inter-school Basketball Tournament Saturday in junior boys´ and senior girls´ categories. In the boys´ category, Mount Glory defeated Odyssey 25-16 as Dipesh Lama and Shyam Thapa scored eight points each. In the girls´ final, TIA beat Galaxy 19-12 with 14 points from Pratima Malla. Ashok Pyakurel of Odyssey and Riya Thapa of TIA were adjudged the most valuable players of the tournament in boys´ and girls´ sections respectively.


Thapa enters final

KATHMANDU: Nepal´s veteran tennis player Kamal Thapa reached the final of the 16th GVK-AISTA Senior Nationals 2011 in the singles section of above-55 age group on Saturday. Thapa defeated beat Ram Mohan Roy of Andhra Pradesh 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinal. At one point, Thapa was 3-0 down in the second set but he fought back win the set 6-3.



In the final to be held on Sunday at the AAP Tennis Complex of LB Stadium in Hyderabad, India, Thapa will meet the number one seeded player S Setu of Tamil Nadu. In the doubles semifinals held late Saturday, Kamal Thapa teamed up with K Radha Krishnamurti to defeat Tulsi Ram and Prakash Mayer 6-2 6-4.



Sankata, Laligurans triumph

KATHMANDU: Sankata Club and Laligurans Pulchowk Sports Club both registered their fourth victories on Saturday in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division Football League being held at Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj. Sankata came from behind to defeat Kumari Yuva Club 2-1 and Pulchowk edged past Tusal Yuva Club 1-0.



Sagun Rai scored the first goal for Sankata in the 56th minute to cancel Kumari´s lead taken by Krishna Shrestha in the 43rd minute. Bikram Adhikari hit the decider five minutes from time. In another match, Wangel Ghalan hit the lone goal in the 27th minute for Pulchowk´s victory. Following the win, both Sankata and Pulchowk has earned equal 15 points each. Birgunj Youth also has 15 points and Star Club leads the table with 16 points. Tusal has 11 and Kumari 5 points.
