SPORTS BRIEFS: Selection for Asiad begins

KATHMANDU, July 6: The first round selection of badminton players to participate in the 16th Asian Games (Asiad) to be held in Guangzhou of China kicked off at the Covered Hall of the National Sports Council on Tuesday.



The contenders in the men´s category are Kishor Rana, Bivek Shrestha, Rajan Shivakoti, Deepak Bohara, Sanjeev Khadka, Bishnu Katawal, Prajwal Rana, Basanta Bajracharya, Bilal Waris and Navaraj Joshi. Those selected in the women´s category are Samjhana Khaling, Sabina Panthi, Nary Thapa, Mary Thapa, Samjhana Neupane and Poonam Gurung. [break]



Two men and a woman among them will be selected for the second round.



Meanwhile, the players in men´s category who have been selected for the second round on the basis of their ranking are Bikash Shrestha, Ramsingh Chaudhary, Sahadev Khadka, Indra Mahat, Sajan Krishna Tamrakar, Pankaj Chand, Ratnajit Tamang and Bishal Pradhan while those in the women´s category are Saradevi Tamang, Puja Shrestha, Sujana Shrestha and Nangsaladevi Tamang.



Likewise, eight men and seven women from Kathmandu have been selected in wushu to participate in the Asiad that will begin on November 12.





South Siders in QF



KATHMANDU, July 6: South Siders advanced into the quarterfinals of the Valley-wide Boys´ Open Basketball Tournament with an easy 60-27 win over Bhanimandal on Tuesday. Sanjay Byanjankar scored the highest 13 points for the winners.



Likewise, Golden Gate also entered the quarterfinals thrashing Revolver 84-32 with the help of JD Wosti´s 31 points.



South Riders will face Prime College while Golden Gate will take on Xavier International in the quarterfinal matches. The tournament is being held at the Covered Hall of the Dasharath Stadium.





Three Star in semis



KATHMANDU, July 6: Nabil Three Star Club advanced into the semifinals of the All India Kalinga Cup Football Tournament being held in Orissa, India.



Three Star defeated Andhra Pradesh XI 1-0 as Santosh Sahukhala scored in the 15th minute of the quarterfinal match. Three Star will now take on Eastern Railway, Kolkata.
