SPORTS BRIEFS: Sagar Sports, Army triumph

MAHENDRANAGAR : Sagar Sports Club of Uttarakhand, India and Nepal Army Club won their respective matches on Sunday in the Hotel Opera-CMG Indo-Nepal Invitational Volleyball Tournament being held in Mahendranagar. Sagar Sports defeated Ranabir Singh Club of Punjab, India 25-17, 25-15, 25-20, 25-12 for its first win in the tournament. Prabin Kumar of the winning team was declared the man-of-the-match. In the inaugural match played on Saturday, Sagar Sports had lost by three sets to one against Nepal Police Club. In another match, Nepal Army Club crushed departmental rival Armed Police Force Club in straight sets 25-10, 25-18, 25-23. Deepak Thapa of Army was declared the man-of-the-match.



Katuwal wins kayak c´ship



KATHMANDU :
Mahadev Katuwal of Gorkha claimed the title of Flat Water Kayak Championship on Sunday on the Phewa Lake in Pokhara, Kaski. Katuwal completed the 1,400 meter distance in 11 minutes 48.89 seconds to take the title while Bivin Gurung of Kaski finished runner-up with a timing of 11 minutes 51.30 seconds. Som Bahadur Magar of Tanahun secured the third position clocking 11 minutes 56.68 seconds. Along with the Everest award, winner Katuwal received Rs 20,000 and the trophy. The runner-up received the Lumbini award and Rs 10,000 while the third-place holder got the Annapurna award and Rs 5,000. Altogether 80 kayaks had participated in the two-day event organized under the First Mountain Sports Festival.
