SPORTS BRIEFS: Prime, Golden Gate in final

KATHMANDU, July 31: Prime and Golden Gate on Saturday inched closer to the titles of the Morgan Cup Eighth Women´s and Ninth Men´s National Basketball Championship respectively underway at the Dasharath Stadium. Both of them are defending champions.



In the first semifinal under the women´s section, Prime eased past Morgan 53-22. Taking control over the match from the beginning, Prime took a wide lead in all quarters against the helpless Morgan who could not add double digit points in any quarter. [break]



In the first three quarters, Prime scored double their opponents --10-5, 12-6, 14-7 -- and took a 13-point lead in the last quarter with a score of 17-4. Gyanu Gauchan top scored with 22 points for Prime.



Now, Prime will meet the winners of the second semifinal match to be held between Whitehouse and NASA for the title.



In the men´s section, Golden Gate registered a hard fought 93-83 victory over Whitehouse A. Whitehouse made an impressive start leading the first quarter by 12 points with a score of 28-16. But Golden Gate bounced back in the match and were ahead in all other quarters 24-19, 26-13, 27-23 to wrap up their victory.



Despite Sadish Pradhan´s highest 44 points for Whitehouse, they were unable to avoid the defeat. Bipendra Maharjan scored 33 points for Golden Gate.



Golden Gate will take on the winners of the second semifinal to be held between NASA and Pentagon for the title.







Double delight for Mathema, Joshi



KATHMANDU, July 31: Anee Mathema and Anushka Joshi won double golds each on Saturday in the Second Kesa Group Junior Tennis Initiative at the Satdobato tennis court.



In the U-10 girls´ singles final, Mathema defeated Mayanka Rana 9-8 and in the U-12 singles final she eased past Bijisha Shreshta 9-5.



Similarly, Joshi had a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 victory over Gita Shrestha to take home the title of U-14, and for the U-16 title she edged past Ganga Sharma 7-5, 6-1 in straight sets.



In the U-9 girls´ singles final, Utsavi secured a straight set 10-5, 10-7 win over Kethlina Mathema, the youngest girl player of the tournament. In the same age group boys´ section, Deepesh Khatri had a hard fought 12-10, 11-9 win over Righdev Singh.



In the U-10 boys´ singles final, Rejan Lama beat Jeevan Gharti Magar 9-8. Likewise, Ashok Kumar Kunwar saw off Avay Gauchan 9-8 to lift the U-12 title.



Brahmanda Singh Moktan clinched the U-14 boys´ singles title beating Gaurav Shahi 6-2, 6-2. Pranjal Kayastha took gold in the U-16 boys´ singles. Kayastha saw off Milan Rokka 6-2, 6-3.



The winners were awarded by Nepal Lawn Tennis Association Vice-president Jyoti Rana and Kesa Group President Keshav Pandey. Altogether 165 players including 52 girls participated in the five-day long tournament.





Shrestha to compete in Asian Body Building



KATHMANDU, July 31: Shyam Shrestha is all set to participate in the Asian Body Building Championship to be held in Iran from August 2-7. Shrestha will participate in the 65 kg category being organized by Iran Body Building and Power Lifting Federation under the aegis of Asian Body Building Federation.







Shrestha will be heading to Tehran on Sunday along with Nepal Body Building and Fitness Association General-secretary Dinesh Bhandari. Shrestha is the gold winner of the recently held Seventh South Asian Body Building Championship.
