SPORTS BRIEFS: NNIPA submits memorandum to Lama

KATHMANDU, June 16: Nepal National and International Players´ Association (NNIPA) on Thursday submitted a 12-point memorandum to newly-appointed National Sports Council (NSC) Member-secretary Yuvaraj Lama.



The NNIPA delegation, led by its president Deepak Bista, demanded permanent jobs for medal winners of official international tournaments and insurance for players during international participation. [break]



Likewise, NNIPA demanded that NSC issue identity cards for national and international players. NNIPA requested NSC to start preparations for the 12th South Asian Games and the Sixth National Games and asked for regular incentives for SAG gold medalists. NNIPA demanded job for 16th Asian Games bronze medalist Deepak Maharjan and land for 11th SAG gold medalists as promised earlier by NSC. NSC Member-secretary Lama assured players that he would act promptly to address their demands.



HIMS, Galaxy in final


KATHMANDU: The host Himalayan International Model Higher Secondary School (HIMS) has set up a title clash with Galaxy Public School in the Fifth HIMS Inter-school Boys´ Basketball Tournament. HIMS defeated Baba Boarding School 60-47 on its home court at Narayantar on Thursday, while Galaxy beat Wilson Academy 73-49 in another semifinal.


Kawa, Gurung win gold medals


KATHMANDU: Bibek Kawa of Bidya Bikas School on Thursday won gold medal in U-14 boys´ singles of the Fourth Gautam Buddha Memorial Inter-school Table Tennis Tournament. Kawa defeated Sumedh Pradhan of Everest School 8-11, 11-9, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9 in the final match played at the National Table Tennis Training Center, Lainchaur. Likewise, Dilip Gurung of AVM beat Little Angels´ Prajwal Gautam 13-11, 11-5, 14-12 to take gold in U-12 boys´ singles. Meanwhile, Mani Kumar Lama of AVM and Preetam Awal of Prabhat School set up a title clash in U-16 boys´ singles. The tournament will conclude on Friday.


MYA draws with Colaba


KATHMANDU: Madhyapur Youth Association (MYA) on Thursday played a 2-2 draw against Colaba FC, Mumbai in its first match of the Hot Weather Football Tournament being held in Haryana, India. Raju Sinkeman and Siddhi Shrestha scored a goal each for MYA in the group stage match. According to MYA President Upendra Man Singh, the draw has kept their semifinal hopes alive. MYA is on an India tour for match practice before it plays the B division national league.



SVI into Group A semis


KATHMANDU: A hat-trick from Kabi Khadka helped Siddhartha Vanasthali Institute (SVI)secure a 3-0 win over Shahid Shukra School during the Coca-cola Inter-school National Football Tournament on Thursday. Khadka scored the first goal in the 10th minute and added the other two in the 33rd and 51st minutes to seal the match in favor of SVI at the ANFA Complex, Satdobato. With the victory, SVI advanced into the semifinals of Group A along with Gyanodaya, Lovely Angels School and Ever Vision. In another match, Ashok Sedhain scored a brace as Gyanodaya thrashed New Summit 5-0. Meanwhile, Lovely Angels School defeated Pushpa Lal Memorial 4-3 in sudden death. Ever Vision also advanced after a 5-4 win over Loyalty Academy in sudden death.



Maharjan sets up title clash against Basnet


KATHMANDU: 16th Asian Games bronze medalist Dipak Maharjan of Nepal Boxing Group and Max Basnet of Tikathali has set up the title clash winning their respective semifinal bouts in men´s 81 kg on Thursday in the Nation-wide Boxing Selection Tournament being held in Dasharath Stadium boxing hall. Govinda Shrestha of Chapali and Uddabh Khatri of Nepal Army in 75 kg, Bhupendra Bista of APF Club and Sudan Gurung of Army in 69 kg have also entered final.



Similarly, Eak Bahadur Ghale of Army and Ratna Bahadur Tamang of Nepal Police will vie for title in 65 kg while Purna Bahadur Lama of APF and Suman Lama of Police in 60 kg, Yukesh Nagarkoti of APF and Sabin Darai of Chitwan in 56 and Sudesh Manandhar of Police and Puran Rai of APF in 52 have entered the final. Amrit KC of Army will fight against Laxuman Tamang of APF Club in men´s 49 kg final. Sabitri Tamang of Makawanpur and Mala Rai of APF have entered final in women´s 48 kg category.
