SPORTS BRIEFS: Nepali takes sole lead

KATHMANDU, Sept 6: Nepal champion Badrilal Nepali has taken sole lead in the ongoing Jyapu Cup Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament on Tuesday. Nepali defeated Rajan Puri in the fourth round and Rabindra Shakya in the fifth round to top the chart from five games.



Surbir Lama and FIDE Master Manish Hamal are in the second and third place respectively with 4.5 points each. [break]



Lama shared points with Hamal in the fourth round and defeated Suryaman Maharjan in the fifth. Meanwhile, Hamal beat Ganesh Man Duwal in the fifth round. With four points each, Rabindra Shrestha, Krishna Thapa, Rajan Puri, Krishna Man Maharjan, Purushottam Chaulagain, Umesh Sainju, Bikash Kuluju and Rijendra Rajbhandari are placed from fourth to 11th position respectively. Seventh-placed Krishna Man Maharjan is the only unrated player among the top 11.



Neric, Galaxy into semis


KATHMANDU: Neric, Galaxy, Saipal and Gyan Niketan have confirmed their place in the semifinals of the Yuva Cup Basketball tournament on Tuesday. In the first quarterfinal, Neric thrashed Bal Dikshya Sadan 32-8. Ankit Bhandari was the highest scorer with 20 points. In another match, Galaxy beat Siddhartha Vanasthali 39-11 as Prince scored 10 points. Shuvatara registered a narrow margin 46-44 win over Saipal for the semifinal spot. In the last quarterfinal match, Gyan Niketan defeated Baylor 30-25. All the matches are being played at the court of Gyan Niketan.



LRI Club clinches korfball title


KATHMANDU: LRI Korfball Club on Tuesday clinched the title of the First National Korfball Tournament being held at LRI School court, Kalanki. In the competitive final match, LRI had a hard fought 7-6 win over Loyalty Club. Nikesh Rai, Biraj Thapa and Mahesh Shah netted vital two goals each for LRI Club. The other goal came from Rojit Basnet. Bhawana Lama’s hat trick went in vain for Loyalty Club. Similarly, Asshment Shrestha netted twice and Sachin Limbu also achieved the target for runner up. Earlier, in the third place playoff, Mout Glory International Club saw off LRI School 8-6. Nikesh Rai of the winning side was adjudged the best player of the tournament and Bhawana Lama took home the highest scorer prize with 15 goals in her name. National Sports Council Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama distributed the certificates, medals and trophies to the winners. Altogether, 12 teams had competed in the three day long tournament.



Chyasal beats Boys Sports Club


KATHMANDU: Chyasal Youth Club registered a 2-1 win over Boys Sports Club in the ongoing Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division League on Wednesday. Goals from Arun Shrestha and Raju Ale guided Chyasal to the victory in the match played at the Nepal Police Training Academy, Maharajgunj. Saroj Shrestha scored a consolation goal for the losing team. The match between Kathmandu Club and Madhyapur Youth Association was cancelled due to technical reason.



Wins for National, NASA


KATHMANDU: Defending champion National Campus and NASA won their respective matches in the ongoing Second Bagmati Inter-college Basketball Tournament on Tuesday in boys’ and girls’ categories. National defeated Morgan College 46-30 with 16 points from Bikash Gurung. Similarly, Samikchya Neupane’s 19 points guided NASA to a 36-16 victory over Brihaspati. In other matches of the boys’ section, Nobel beat Nava Jeevan 41-20, White House overcame Xavier International 52-42 and VS Niketan defeated Bishnumati College 37-24. Likewise, in the girls’ category, Nobel Academy defeated Reliance 24-19.
