Nat’l 3-on-3 basketball from Sunday
KATHMANDU: Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA) in collaboration with Premier College will organize Premier Cup 1st National 3-on-3 Basketball Championship in both men’s and women’s categories from July 3. All the matches of the championship will be played at the National Sports Council Covered Hall. Altogether 32 teams in men’s category and 16 teams in women’s from Chitwan, Rupendehi, Syangja, Kaski and Sunsari will be participating in the tournament alongside teams from the Valley. Sponsor Premier College will bear all the expenses of the tournament as NeBA has signed a three-year contract with the college. The semifinalists of the U-19 3-on-3 will also be playing in the tournament. Meanwhile, Premier College has signed Deepak Bista as its taekwondo coach, it has hired Binod Das as cricket coach. Likewise, Bijay Khatri will look after the basketball team while Upendra Man Singh will be football coach for the college team. Premier College also signed Rajendra Kapali as table-tennis coach and Raju Chettri as lawn tennis coach.
Women’s Chess Tournament begins
KATHMANDU: The Second National Women’s Chess Tournament as well as Annapurna Cup Boys’ and Girls’ Chess Tournament kicked off in the capital on Friday. Defending Champion Monalisa Khambu won her first match in the women’s section of the tournament organized by Annapurna Higher Secondary School and Nepal Chess Association. Likewise, Asmita Adhikari, Tara Ghale, Matina KC, Binita Kapali, Pratibha Tuladhar, Shushila Gurung and Bishekha Jaiswal won their respective matches in the category. In U-19 boys’ section, defending champion Nikesh Duwal, Rupesh Jaiswal, Himal Lama, Bibek Lama, Rohan Dangol Sameer Rana and Bibek Thapa won their respective matches. In boys’ U-15, Prashant Thapa, Raj Prajapati, Shushil Pradhan, Prabin Dahal, Nikunj GC, Prajwal Simkhada and Aisas Khambu registered victories on the opening day. Shreyash Lama, Lachchhu Bhandari, Suvash Chhetri, Sudesh Chhetri, Pranay Chand, Kaushal Kumar Ram, Chandra Prakash Gurung, Bikesh Jaiswal, Rajiv Karki, Sultan Siddiki, Bidit Pratap Singh, Jenish Thapa, Milan Lama and Arju Bindukar gained a point each after winning respective matches in boys U-13. In girls’ U-13, Unja Adhikari, Puja Das Baniya, Yasika Moktan, Karina Bamjan, Akriti Pandey and Suruchi Lama won their respective matches. The five-day tournament features 109 players from 26 districts.
Athletes bade farewell
KATHMANDU: Nepal Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA) bade farewell to the two athletes and a coach who are scheduled to participate in the 19th Asian Athletics Championship amidst a function at the National Sports Council on Friday. Army Club athlete Hari Kumar Rimal is to contest in men’s 1,500 and 5,000 m in the championship while Nepal APF Club’s middle-distance runner Surya Maya Rai will compete in women’s 800 and 1500 m. Chief Coach of Athletics at the National Sports Council (NSC) Mohan Ghale coach the athletes. The championship is scheduled to be held from July 7 to 10 in Kobe, Japan. National Sports Council (NSC) member-secretary Yuvaraj Lama, NAAA General-secretary Rabi Rajkarnikar gave their best wishes to the athletes during the farewell program. NSC had released Rs 250000 to NAAA on Thursday for the athletes’ participation in the championship. The three-member Nepali team will leave for Japan on Monday.
Pugilists off to Jakarta
KATHMANDU: A three-member Nepali boxing team left for Indonesia on Friday to participate in the 21st President Cup Boxing Championship scheduled to be held there. Asian Games bronze medalist Deepak Maharjan and Maya Chaudhary will represent Nepal in men’s 81 kg and women’s 51 kg weight category in the championship while chief coach of boxing at the National Sports Council (NSC) Prachanda Sharma will guide them during the tournament. Nepal Boxing Association (NBA) bade farewell to the coach and boxers amidst a function in the capital on Friday morning. NSC member-secretary Yuvaraj Lama, NBA President Rabi Raj Thapa, NBA General-secretary Rajiv Shrestha and other officials wished good luck to the boxers. The President Cup is scheduled for July 3-8 in Jakarta, Indonesia. NSC had released Rs 500000 to NBA on Thursday for Nepal’s participation in the President Cup and Asian Confederation Boxing Championship.

KATHMANDU: Nepal Table Tennis Association has decided to organize the Second Morgan Cup Inter-college Table Tennis Tournament on July 10-13. The association organizing a press conference on Friday informed that the 300 players from 35 colleges are to participate in the tournament. According to the association President Chatura Nanda Baidya, there will be seven events in the tournament.
Coca-Cola Cup postponed
KATHMANDU: All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) indefinitely postponed the preliminary matches of Coca-Cola Cup Inter-school National Football Tournament on Friday. ANFA has cited technical reasons behind postponing the tournament. Meanwhile, ANFA suspended Gandhi Aadarsha School from the tournament after the school was found featuring players who have already participated in the Martyrs Memorial C Division League last year. GEMS School had filed protest against Gandhi School after they lost a group round match against the latter on Thursday.
