Mahendra Bhawan hammered St Xaviers 35-4 riding on 17 points of Shanti Shrestha. In boy´s basketball, Siddhartha Vanasthali, Kathmandu Valley and Galaxy secured semifinal spots. Siddhartha Vanasthali beat Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya 45-41. Narayan Khadka netted 13 points for winning side. Kathmandu Valley eased past Malpi 66-28 with 13 points from Ang Tsherig. Riding on 16 points of Prince Singh Galaxy outclassed Neric 51-45.
TIA, Wilson advance
KATHMANDU: TIA and Wilson Academy on Wednesday secured quarterfinal berths in senior boys´ section during the First The Excelsior Cup being held at the host´s court in Swayambhu. TIA dispatched GEMS 44-26 and Wilson edged past Arniko 34-15. Buddha Academy and Skylark also won their respective boys basketball. Buddha Academy saw off Teresa 33-25 and Skylark beat Ideal Model 32-25.
In junior boys´ basketball, Swayambhu edged past Galaxy 29-24 to secure quarterfinal place. In another match, GEMS beat Arniko 11-7. In junior boys´ Five-A-Side-Football, Galaxy made it to the quarterfinal as the runner up of group A. Galaxy beat St Xavier´s 1-0.
Furba Sherpa scored the decisive goal for Galaxy. In another football match, GEMS beat Kathmandu Valley 1-0 and TIA edged past Daffodil 2-0.
Full Contact Karate from Friday
KATHMANDU: Nepal Shin-Kyokushin Karate Association has announced to organize the first Nationwide Full Contact Karate Tournament from Friday. The organizers informed Wednesday that 150 players from 15 districts will participate in the two-day tournament to be held at Lamatar, Lalitpur on September 23 and 24.
The players from 25 dojos will compete in six categories. Competition will be held in below 25 kg, below 35 kg, below 45 kg, below 55 kg, below 65 kg and free weight categories. The organizers will arrange lodging and fooding facilities for the players from different districts.
Mt Everest taekwondo begins Thursday
KATHMANDU: The First Mount Everest International Taekwondo Championship is kicking off at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium on Thursday. The international championship is jointly organized by Nepal Taekwondo Association (NTA) and International Nepalese Taekwondo Association (INTA). Players from 11 countries -- Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, the UAE, the USA and host Nepal -- are participating in the championship.
Altogether 81 players -- 50 male and 30 female -- will be competing in 14 weight categories. The men´s section has eight weight categories while the women´s has six. Eight male and six female players are representing Nepal at the championship.
Central Region into hockey semis
KATHMANDU: Central Region on Wednesday advanced into the semifinals of the National Hockey Tournament under way in Pokhara of Kaski.
Central Region defeated Mid-western Region 3-0 in a one-sided game for a place in the last four. Mithilesh Kumar scored twice and Munna Siddiki added another in Central Region´s victory.
On Tuesday, Central Region had defeated Far-western Region 2-0.
In another match, Nepal Army defeated Central Region 3-0 with a goal each from Sher Bahadur Rokka, Samuel Rai and Dipendra Ayar. Army dominated the match from the beginning to the end.
On Thursday, Western Region will take on Nepal Army while Far-western Region will lock horns with Eastern Region.
The tournament, being held in league-cum-knockout format, will conclude on Saturday. Altogether six teams -- five regional teams and Nepal Army are -- participating in the event. The winner and the runner-up team will bag a purse of Rs 50,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively.
Lama squanders lead
KATHMANDU: Former Nepal champion Surbir Lama received a blow on the third day of the Dhurbatara Cup Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament on Wednesday at Damak. Lama, who was leading the tournament till the end of the third round, dropped to the 11th position after being defeated by Raju Subedi and held by Dharam Lama in the fourth and fifth rounds respectively.
Trailokya Nandan from India is in the leading position with 4.5 points from five rounds. Nandan beat Niranjan Prajapati in the fourth round and was held to a draw by Krishna Thapa in the fifth round.
Jhapa´s young player Niraj Niraoula is in the second place with 4.5 points. Niraoula overcame Chunamani Rai and Raju Subedi in the fourth and fifth rounds of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Thapa defeated Umesh Sainju in the fourth round to finish third. With four points each, Milan Roka, Niranjan Prajapati, Raju Subedi, Dharam Bahadur Lama, Rajan Puri, Rakesh Rauniyar and Naveen Tandukar are trailing behind from fourth to 10th positions.
