Kathmandu Club wins title
KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Club on Saturday won the title of Manmohan Memorial Cup Football Tournament at the Chyasal ground. The title also became the first title after a decade for the second division club established in 2031 BS. Kathmandu defeated Star Club 4-2 in a tiebreaker following a 1-1 draw in the regulation time. Sajan Pradhan had given 44th minute lead to Kathmandu Club but Rajesh Das hit back the equalizer in the 55th minute. This is the third knockout title for Kathmandu Club. The last time Kathmandu Club had won the title was in 2058 BS.
Shakya, Maharjan to compete in universiade
KATHMANDU: A three-member Nepali taekwondo team, including two players, will leave for China on Sunday to participate in the 26th Summer Universiade 2011, scheduled to be held in Shenzhen from August 12 to 23. South Asian Games gold medalist Ayasha Shakya, who studies in Crimson International College, is participating in women’s 53 kg weight category while Ashish Maharjan, of Unique College, is competing in men’s 60 kg weight category. Players from 120 countries will participate in 20 different games in Universiade.
Ncell wins Corporate Futsal
KATHMANDU: Ncell won the title of Corporate Futsal 2011 on Saturday defeating Last Resort 6-2 in the final match played at the GAA Hall, Thamel. Suresh Dhungana completed a hat trick for Ncell while Sachindra Pradhan, Ashutosh Paudel and Khem Bahadur netted one each. Sailesh Chaudhary and Nima Lama scored one each for Last Resort. Earlier, Ncell had defeated DCBL in the semifinal. Likewise, Last Resort eased past Investment Bank 4-2 in another semifinal.
Police misbehave with jurno
KATHMANDU: Sport journalist Manoj Ghimire has alleged that police officials at the Dasharath Stadium misbehaved with him on Saturday. Ghimire, associated with Rajdhani Dainik, had gone to the stadium to cover Nepal-Sri Lanka match. Police personnel reportedly pushed him around the stadium premise. A police deputed at the gate asked Ghimire to show his identity card. But Ghimire, who failed to produce it, called All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) officials, who signaled the police to let him in. Meanwhile, Nepal Journalist Federation Rajhdani Branch has condemned the police’s act and demanded that the police officials involved be punished.
Khatri, Shah win titles
KATHMANDU: Yuvaraj Khati won the title of men’s singles in the above 50 age group in the Second Veteran Men’s and Women’s Table Tennis Tournament on Saturday while Fifth South Asian Games gold medalist Sijarin Shah clinched the title of women’s singles in the above 45 age group. Khati defeated Prakash Shrestha 11-7, 12-10, 11-9 while Shah beat Reshma Shah Shrestha 11-6, 12-10, 11-6 in the finals played at the National Table Tennis Training Center. Likewise, Manohari Thapa won the final against Sudarshan Gautam 11-5, 11-7, 11-6 in men’s singles of the above 45 age group while Ananda Dhakhwa and Eto Masanopu stood first in the men’s singles of the above 55 and 60 age groups respectively. Former player JP Lohani handed over prizes to the winners.
