Shrestha clinches badminton title
KATHMANDU: Bikash Shrestha of Nepal Police Club on Saturday clinched the badminton title under men´s singles category in the Madan Bhandari Memorial Open Badminton Tournament. Shrestha had hard third set victory over familiar opponent Sajan Krishna Tamrakar of Armed Police Force (APF). Shrestha bounced back in the second and third set 21-12, 21-10 after going down 19-21 in the first set. Shrestha bagged a purse of Rs 10,000 while runners up Tamrakar received Rs 6,000. Ratnajit Tamang and Indra Mahata of APF jointly finished third and were awarded Rs 3,000 each. Mahata and Tamang´s pair of APF took home the winners trophy in men´s doubles section. The APF men defeated national champion pair of Bimal Shrestha and Ram Rai from Lalitpur 22-20, 19-21, 21-24. Surendra Bahadur Singh and Hemanta Pal of Nepal Police took veteran doubles title. The duos defeated Ramesh Kharel and Min Bahadur of Nepal Police 21-16, 12-21, 21-18.
KC honored
KATHMANDU: Rosebud School on Saturday honored Jeetbahadur KC, the athlete to win first international medal for Nepal. He was presented with a cash of Rs 5,000 along with letter of appreciation and shawl by Antoo Shrestha, the chairman of school management committee amidst the school´s Annual Sports Meet program held at the Dasharath Stadium. Earlier, KC and Shrestha had jointly inaugurated the Sports Meet.
Prime, Whitehouse in QF
KATHMANDU: The hosts Prime College and Whitehouse advanced into the quarterfinals of the Eighth Prime Cup Inter-college Basketball Tournament in the boys´ category on Saturday. Prime defeated Lincoln 48-23 on their home court in Naya Bazar to top Group ´A´ and subsequently secured the quarterfinal berth. Allen KC top scored 13 points for Prime´s victory. Whitehouse made it to the quarterfinal as the winner of Group ´D´. They defeated VS Niketan 41-31. Asim Shrestha contributed 12 points to Whitehouse. Morgan International have also qualified for the quarterfinals as the runners-up of the group. In other matches of the boy´s category, Ace, National Campus and Pentagon won their respective matches. Meanwhile, the girls´ teams of defending champions Whitehouse and the hosts Prime have maintained their winning streak. Mrinaline Shrestha scored 12 points as Whitehouse squeezed past Orient 35-33 while Prime beat NASA 32-23.
Transfer window opens
KATHMANDU: Transfer window for footballers in first division clubs of Nepal has opened on Saturday. The transfer window will be open until January 27. The window has opened in the domestic football for the second time in the current season as per the rule of FIFA, the apex football body of the world. However, none of the players were registered with All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) on the first day on Saturday. If any of the club wants to enroll player from foreign countries they should approach through Transfer Matching System (TMS) according to ANFA CEO Indraman Tuladhar. The 12-week long first transfer window of the season had opened during the A division league in July. According to FIFA regulations, transfer window opens twice a year.
NRN Qatar felicitates Bista
KATHMANDU: Taekwondo ace Deepak Bista was felicitated by NRN Qatar on Friday in Doha. NRN Qatar President Narendra Bhat gave away a check of Rs 200,000 to Bista while Dr Suryanath Mishra, the Nepali ambassador, presented a letter of appreciation. According to President Bhat they chose to award Bista as recognition of his contributions to Nepali sports. Bista is the most successful athlete of Nepal who won fourth consecutive gold in the South Asian Games.
