SPORTS BRIEFS: LG Golf on Sept 11

KATHMANDU, Sept 2: CG Electronics of Chaudhary Group is organizing the LG Golf Championship 2010 on September 11 at the Gokarna Golf Club to celebrate 23 years of its operation in Nepal. Organizing a press conference in the capital on Thursday, CG Electronics General Manager Ramesh Shrestha said that the amateur event will feature about 100 players including men, women and senior golfers from golf clubs across the nation. The tournament will be played over 18 holes on a stableford format with 3/4 handicap allowance. The company plans to conduct golf tournaments every year.



Rana sibling selected for swimming



Rana sibling Sailesh and Saila booked a place for swimming in the 16th Asian Games to be held at Guangzhou, China. In the final qualifiers held at Satdobato swimming pool on Thursday, elder sister Saila secured first position in the women´s 100m freestyle coming ahead of Osin Bharati. Rana clocked 1min 12.07 sec while Bharati finished it in 1 min 14.45 sec. In men´s 100 m freestyle, Sailesh covered the distance in 1 min 00.49 sec to come ahead of Olympian Prasiddha Jung Shah who finished the race in 1 min 04.27 sec. Despite the selection of swimmers Nepal Olympic Committee has said that the swimmers will not be allowed to compete in the Asian Games as the players have not been registered for the games.



Teresa in final



Teresa School on Thursday advanced into the girls´ final of Tenth Wilson Valley-wide Inter-school Basketball Tournament (Wilson Hoops) at the hosts Wilson´s court Bafal. In the second semifinal Teresa ousted NIMS 21-17 riding on nine points of Sarita Lama. Teresa will meet Galaxy in the final. Under senior boys´ section, Ullens and Sambotta have fixed the final date and in junior boys´ section host will take on Skylark. Final matches will be held on Saturday.


KC, Maharjan in quarters



Amrit KC of Nepal Army and Rajkumar Maharjan of the hosts Bosigaun Sports Club on Thursday secured quarterfinal berths in men´s 49 kg at the First Harisaran Memorial National Open Boxing Tournament winning respective bouts. KC defeated Nikesh Pradhan of Ilam and Maharjan defeated Hasta Bahadur Dhada. In same category, Surendra Darlami of Nawalparasi beat Kamal Thapamagar of his own district and Laxuman Tamang of APF defeated Niranjan Kumar Shrestha of Makwanpur to secure a place in quarterfinals. In men´s 52 kg, Hari Bahadur of Salyan beat Bharat Bahaudur Malla of Kailali and Saran Maharjan of hosts edged past Bhai Krishna Sunwar of Daman. Likewise, Raju Budhamagar of host downed Kabindra Maharjan of APF and Gopal Basnet of Jhapa thrashed Chandra Joshi of Dang to book a place in quarterfinals.
