SPORTS BRIEFS: Lama to lead NMSF

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): The first general assembly of Nepal Mountain Sports Federation (NMSF) held in Pokhara on Sunday elected National Sports Council Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama as its president. The general assembly also unanimously elected a 23-member executive committee. Krishna Aryal, Man Bahadur Neupane, Ngawang Ngima Sherpa, Sanjeev Pandey and Suman Devekota are vice-presidents in the committee while Govinda Bhattarai is the general secretary. Ten sports associations related to the tourism sector are affiliated to the federation.



Deepjyoti, Springdale in volleyball final

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Deepjyoti and Springdale have set up a title clash in boys´ volleyball of the 19th Eicher Gyan Carnival. Deepjyoti struggled past GEMS 25-14, 20-25, 25-12 in the semifinal match played at the court of host Gyanodaya Residential School, Khokana in Lalitpur on Sunday. Springdale defeated Little Angels´ 25-20, 25-13 in the second semifinal. In boys´ basketball, Gyanodaya beat GEMS 65-42, Galaxy edged past Kathmandu Valley School 50-40 and The Excelsior defeated Innovative 61-54 to secure semifinal berths.



Khadgi, Gurung win 2nd round matches

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Saroj Khadgi and Rajan Gurung won their respective matches on Sunday in the second round of the First London Open Snooker Tournament. Khadgi defeated Sujan Pun 4-3 in the match played at London Snooker House, Manbhawan in Lalitpur, while Gurung thrashed Jaya Karmacharya 4-0. Likewise, Niraj Simkhawal, Jeevan Deula, Som Tamang, Chhopel Sherpa, Tashi Wangchuk, Sandu Pakhrin and Bikash Shrestha won their respective matches in the second round of the tournament.
