SPORTS BRIEFS: Kamal Thapa cruises into QF

KATHMANDU, Oct 25: Kamal Thapa continued his winning spree in the Veterans´ Tennis Tournament being held in New Delhi, India on Monday.



Thapa thrashed V Gajapati of Maharashtra, India, 6-1, 6-1 in straight sets in the second round match to enter the quarterfinals of the competition.[break]



Chess tournament starting Wednesday



The Late Dhan Bahadur Pradhan Memorial FIDE Rating Chess Tournament will kick off in the capital on Wednesday. The Himalayan Chess Club, Lalitpur informed on Monday that the three-day tournament will have 20 rated and 14 unrated players.



According to the organizers, the tournament will have nine rounds and matches will be played in the Swiss League format. The winner of the rated category will bag Rs 4,000 while the top five will also be awarded with cash prize.



Meanwhile, the winner of the unrated category will receive Rs 1,500. Mohan Singh Pradhan, a chess lover and son of the late Pradhan, has sponsored Rs 15,000 for the tournament.


ACC cricket coaching begins



Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) in association with Asian Cricket Council (ACC) started the ACC Level-1 Cricket Coaching Course from Monday in Kathmandu. Twenty players are participating in the 5-day course running from October 25 to 29.



National cricket team´s vice-captain Gyanendra Malla and former players Sanjam Regmi, Mahesh Chhetri, Shakti Gauchan, Paresh Lohani and Dipesh Khatri are among the 20 participants. Neera Rajopadhyaya, the captain of women´s national cricket team and Binu Budha Magar are also taking part in the program. They are the first two Nepali women cricketers to take the course.



The top two students will get an opportunity to take part in the Level-2 coaching course going to be held in Thailand this year. Rumesh Ratnayake, the ACC Development Officer and former Sri Lankan fast bowler, is training the participants.
