SPORTS BRIEFS: Judo team off to Japan

KATHMANDU, Sept 6: A five-member Nepali judo team including two judokas left for Tokyo, Japan on Monday to participate in the 16th World Judo Championship.







Debu Thapa and Parshuram Tharu will compete in the tournament to be held from September 9-13. Thapa will compete in women´s U-63 kg while Tharu will contest in men´s U-60 kg. [break]



Nepal Judo Association Vice President Piyush Shrestha is the team manager while Narendra Kumar Dangol is the coach. The other coach of the team is JICA volunteer coach Masahira Maida.



This is the first participation of Nepal after the World Championship held in Brazil in 2007.





Innovative, Neric win



KATHMANDU, Sept 6: Innovative and Neric registered wins on Monday under junior boys´ section in the first AIA Inter-school Basketball Tournament at the hosts´ court at Shankhamul.



Innovative eased past New Summit 33-14 riding on 12 points of Sudarshan Shahi. Neric beat TIA 22-19. Binod Bhandari scored 11 points for Neric.



Gaurishankar, New Shrine, Brihaspati and Rosebud also emerged victorious in the junior boys´ category. Gaurishankar beat Kathmandu English School 22-15, New Shrine ousted hosts Awareness International Academy 23-15, Brihaspati defeated Kanjiroba 18-8 and Rosebud thrashed Odyssey 29-8.



In girls´ category, New Summit, Daffodil and Rosebud emerged victorious. New Summit outplayed Neric 16-7, Daffodil edged past Baba 17-11 and Rosebud had a narrow 13-10 win over HHCA.
