SPORTS BRIEFS: GEMS, Prithvi victorious

KATHMANDU, Sept 20: The girls´ teams of GEMS, Prithvi School and Rato Bangala School registered victory in their respective matches on Tuesday in the 18th Eicher Gyan Carnival.



In the matches played at the Court of Gyanodaya School at Khokana, GEMS beat LRI 34-11 with 15 points from Shruti Kharel. [break]



Prithvi thrashed Bhrihespati 40-12 as Sukantala Tamang scored 12 points. With 16 points from Nira Shrestha, Rato Bangala defeated Little Angles 28-19. In the matches of the boy´s section, Galaxy overcame Little Angles 52-31. Prince Singh was the highest scorer of the match with 16 points.


NIMS in quarterfinals


KATHMANDU: NIMS has qualified for the quarterfinal of First The Excelsior Cup Basketball Tournament being held at the court Swayambhu on Tuesday. NIMS beat Oasis 45-32 in the boys´ senior category with 22 points from Sandesh Tamang. In other matches of same category, Wilson beat the hosts 47-28, New Arunodaya overcame Deneb 32-23 and Whitefield overpowered Araniko 28-17.



In the junior boys´ section, Wilson defeated Mount Glory 34-22, Arunodaya thrashed Deneb 31-8 and hosts The Excelsior edged past Galaxy 30-27. Brihaspati and Galaxy registered win in the junior Five-a-side football match. Brihaspati registered narrow margin 1-0 win over Kathmandu Valley while Galaxy overpowered The Excelsior ´A´ 3-1.


Malakar held to draw


KATHMANDU: Prachanda Malakar was held to a draw in the sixth round of the Fourth Mumbai Mayors´ Cup Open International Chess Tournament being held in Mumbai, India on Tuesday. However, Govinda Khadka and Asha Narayan Lawat registered victories in the same round. Malakar now has three points after sharing point with Ayush Gandhi of India in the sixth round. Lawat also took his tally to three points after defeating Nitin Nawar of India. Khadka defeated Amol Pratap in the sixth round and has 2.5 points from six rounds. Meanwhile, Bijay Maharjan lost to Chandra Shekhar Sahu of India.
