SPORTS BRIEFS: CoAS Trophy kicks off

KATHMANDU, Sept 16: Min Bahadur Chaudhary and Durga Devkota of the Valley Division Headquarters won sprint titles on the opening day of the CoAS Trophy on Sunday. Chaudhary clocked 10.94 seconds to win the men´s 100 m race ahead of Dashiram Chaudhary (11.06 s) and Chabilal Chaudhary (11.09 s).



In the women´s 100 m final, Devkota won the title with a timing of 13.31 seconds. Rupa Khadka (14.22 s) and Shova Khadka (14.33 s) finished second and third respectively. [break]Newly appointed Army Chief General Gaurav SJB Rana inaugurated the games featuring six Division Headquarters of the Nepal Army as well as the Supporting Force and Special Force. The winning team will receive the CoAS Trophy during the Army Day later this year.



Rose Bud, Lord Buddha win titles



KATHMANDU
: Rose Bud won the title of the First Inter College and School Basketball Championship in the college boys´ section while Lord Buddha clinched the title in the school girls´ category on Sunday. In the boys´ final held at the court of host Bajra International College, Rose Bud defeated Premier College 51-38 to lift the title. Sanjeev Maharjan of the winning team top-scored with 22 points. In the girls´ final, Lord Buddha saw off Young Heart 19-17. Ganesh Bhandari of Rose Bud and Binu Shrestha of Lord Buddha were the best players in the boys´ and girls´ category respectively.



Valley View into semis



KATHMANDU
: Host Valley View English School advanced into the semifinal of the Valley View Inter School Basketball Championship with a 54-20 win over Innovative School on Sunday. New Zenith, Rara Hill and Wilson Academy also made it to the semifinals winning their respective matches.



Double delight for India



KATHMANDU
: India claimed two golds in the First South Asian Sepak Takraw on Sunday after finishing first in both regu and double takraw matches held at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium. In the regu category, India defeated Nepal 15-6, 17-5, 16-14 to smash the hopes of the home side that gave impressive performances in the earlier matches. Pakistan and Bangladesh jointly finished third. India finished first in the double round robin league with eight points followed by Nepal with six points and Bangladesh third with 4 points.



New Diamond secures semifinal berth



KATHMANDU
: New Diamond Sports Club stormed into the semifinals of the Open Invitational National Women´s Volleyball Tournament that kicked off in Pokhara on Sunday. New Diamond had a head start over its opponent as it registered two wins from two matches in Group A to secure a place in the semifinals. New Diamond defeated Fishtail 25-14, 25-7, 25-11 in the first match while it also secured a 25-7, 25-5, 25-4 straight sets win over Chhore Patan Club in another match. Nepal Police Club and Gyanu Baba also won their respective matches.



Samaj Kalyan thrashes Charumati



KATHMANDU
: Samaj Kalyan Khelkud Kendra registered an impressive win in the Red Bull C Division League on Sunday while Sano Gaucharan Youth Club labored to a victory in another match held at the Chyasal ground, Lalitpur. In the first match, Samaj Kalyan thrashed Charumati Youth Club with a brace from Rakesh Sapkot and Anup Lamsal. Meanwhile, Kiran Lama scored a lone goal as Sano Gaucharan beat Nayabasti Sakchyamnagar Club. In another match Binod Karki scored a hat-trick as Planning Boys United beat Sanepa Club 3-0.



NTU players rejoin NTA



KATHMANDU
: About 200 taekwondo players, including seven dojos that participated at the National Taekwondo Union (NTU) during the Sixth National Games, has returned to Nepal Taekwondo Association (NTA) on Sunday. The players returned to the NTA under leadership of Sixth National Games gold medalist Ashok Khadka. "We got involved in the NTU for short time and we regret that" said Khadka who is also the NTU President of Kathmandu district. "We decided to rejoin the NTA due to uncertainty and recognition as NTU does not have international recognition."
