SPORTS BRIEFS: CG President's Cup on Saturday

KATHMANDU, March 27: Chaudhary Group is hosting the CG President´s Cup Golf Championship 2013 at its own golf course in Nawalparasi on Saturday, the organizer said at a press conference held in the capital on Wednesday to announce the date of the annual amateur event. The championship will be played over 18 holes in stableford format with ¾ handicap allowance. About 30 golfers are expected to vie for the title.



Chaudhary Group Managing Director Nirvana Chaudhary said the tournament could help develop golf culture in the Tarai region of the country. [break]



According to Chaudhary, there will be prizes for the winner, runner-up, second runner-up, best gross, ladies´ winner, junior winner, longest drive, most birdies and closest to the pin. Gokarna Forest Resort has collaborated with Chaudhary Group to conduct three golf tournaments in a calendar year. CG Golf Tournament was held in February while LG Open Golf Tournament will be played later this year.



Hamal, Shrestha make winning starts



KATHMANDU
: FIDE Master Manish Hamal and Candidate Master Keshav Shrestha made winning starts in the Lalitpur Festival First Cooperative Cup Chess Tournament that started on Wednesday. Hamal defeated Mahendra Kumar Sambahamphe while Shrestha edged past Damodar Gaiju in the first round. Likewise, Surbir Lama, Madan Krishna Kayastha, Himal Lama, Rajendra Bajracharya, Niranjan Prajapati, Dirgharaj Joshi, Niraj Niraula, Badri Lal Nepali, Bibek Thing, Manishwar Thapa and Rajendra Prasad Shrestha won their first-round matches on Wednesday.



Sajin Maharjan, Bishwa Bijay Ghimire, Shyam Sundar Shrestha, Rabindra Bahadur Thapa, Rabindra Shakya, Sanjay Maharjan, Nabin Chaudhary and Sachin Kumar Chaudhary also registered victories in the first round. The tournament is being held in league-cum-knockout format. After seven rounds under the Swiss League System, the top 32 players will make it to the knockout round. Altogether 105 players are participating in the tournament. The winner will get a motorbike while the runner-up will bag Rs 50,000.
