SPORTS BRIEFS: Bijeshwari win running shield

KATHMANDU, July 3: Newton and New Diamond School won the titles of boys´ and girls´ volleyball respectively in the Second President´s Cup Running Shield Tournament organized by Kathmandu District Sports Development Committee while Bijeshwari School topped the medals tally and won the running shield.



Bijeshwari have a total of 75 points from various events of athletics and volleyball in the tournament. Pemba Tamang of Deepjyoti School was adjudged the best among the boys while Gyani Chunara of Bijeshwari was declared the best among the girls in athletics. [break]



Meanwhile, Newton defeated Deepjyoti 25-13, 25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 15-6 in the final of boys´ volleyball on Saturday at the National Sports Council Covered Hall. Kamana School secured third place in the event while Kusum Pariyar of the winning side received the award for the most valuable player of the event.



Likewise, New Diamond thrashed Samakhushi English Boarding School (SEB) 25-5, 25-22, 25-18 in the final of girls´ volleyball. Bijeshwari claimed third position while Ramila Tandukar of the winning school was adjudged the most valuable player of the event.





Three Star travel to India



KATHMANDU, July 3: Nabil Three Star Club headed toward the Indian city of Cuttack to participate in the All India Kalinga Cup Football Tournament on Saturday.



The tournament has started from Thursday but Three Star are drawn only from the quarterfinals. Nineteen players and four officials are representing Three Star under the leadership of coach Santosh Baniya in the tournament.





Trijyoti, Somang in group final



KATHMANDU, July 3: Trijyoti High School and Somang Academy secured berths in the final of group ´A´ in the Coca-Cola Cup Inter-school Boys´ National Football Tournament. Trijyoti received a walkover from St Xavier´s while Somang defeated Joseph School 5-1 at the ANFA Technical Center, Chyasal, on Saturday.



Likewise, TIA and Shramik Shanti Higher Secondary School secured their berths in the group ´B´ final. TIA thrashed Snow Land Ranag School 3-1 and Shramik beat Guheshwari Higher Secondary School.



Meanwhile, Lord Buddha Secondary School eased past Krishna Higher Secondary School 4-1 in the tournament on Saturday at the Sano Gaucharan Ground, Kathmandu.



Likewise, Himalayan Boarding School pulled off a 4-3 victory over Gurukul Public High School in a tiebreaker and Deepjyoti thrashed Saraswati Shiksha Griha 4-0. NIMS beat KU High School 3-2 at Sano Gaucharan to top their group.





Whitehouse, Prime triumph



KATHMANDU, July 3: Whitehouse and Prime College began the Valley-wide Men´s Open Basketball Tournament on a winning note on Saturday.



Whitehouse thrashed Xavier International 75-37 at Patan Multiple Campus court in the opening match of the tournament organized by Madan Bhandari Sports Academy. Likewise, Prime struggled past Patan Multiple Campus 53-49.



Altogether 12 teams are participating in the tournament.
