SPORTS BRIEFS: Badminton team off to India

KATHMANDU, Dec 17: A nine-member Nepali badminton team left for India on Friday to participate in the Tata India International Series scheduled to be held in Mumbai from December 21-25.



The Nepali team includes six players and three officials. [break]



The players in the men´s category are Bishal Pradhan, Indra Mahat, Sajan Krishan Tamrakar and Bivek Shrestha. Likewise, Pooja Shrestha and Nangsala Devi Tamang will participate in the women´s category.



The team led by Laba Bhakta Shrestha includes Jayant Shrestha as the coach and Jagat Khadka as the team manager.



Kantipur, Daffodil in semis



Kantipur School and Daffodil School advanced into the semifinals of the Second Jiten Thakuri Memorial Inter-school Basketball Tournament winning their respective matches in the girls´ category on Friday. Kantipur will face the hosts NIMS in the semifinal. In the boys´ category, Wilson Academy, Daffodil and Sky Lark secured quarterfinal berths.



Pushpa Sadan in semis



Pushpa Sadan advanced into the semifinals of the Second New Zenith Cup Valley-wide Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the junior boys´ category on Friday. Pushpa Sadan struggled hard to defeat LRI 9-8. In another match, the hosts New Zenith ousted Gyan Niketan 23-10. Sugun Maharjan contributed 10 points for the hosts. In the senior boys´ category, Nikesh Rai scored 30 points for LRI as they deteated Pushpa Sadan 49-33.


WMMC win inaugural match



Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (WMMC) won the inaugural match of the Hosanna Group First Christmas Peace Cup 2010 Football Tournament on Friday at the Chyasal ground. WMMC secured a thumping 4-0 win over Chyasal Youth Club to qualify for the semifinals. Pankaj Lama, Rupesh Chhetri, Kamal Shrestha and Dinesh Sinkhada socred a goal each for WMMC. Chhetri was later adjudged the man of the match. Saturday´s match will be held between Brigade Boys Club and Christian Sports Fellowship Team at two in the afternoon.


Namuna set title clash with SEBS



Namuna English School on Friday set up a title clash with Samakhushi English Boarding School (SEBS) during the 10th Annal Jyoti Cup Valley-wide Inter-school Volleyball Tournament in the mini boys´ event. Namuna defeated the defending champions Newton 25-22, 25-015, 23-25, 25-10 to secure the final berth. Likewise, SEBS defeated the hosts Annal Jyoti ´A´ 25-11, 25-8, 25-19 in another semifinal match. Annal Jyoti ´A´ finished third in the event. In the senior boys´ category, Nightingale will face Newton in the final match on Saturday. Defending champions SEBS settled for the third position. In the girls´ category, defending champions New Diamond set up a title clash with Gyan Sudha. Bijeshwari clinched the third position.


South Siders basketball from Sunday



The 2nd South Siders Open Basketball Tournament is set to kick off on Sunday at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium. The ten-day tournament that will conclude on December 28 will be held in league-cum-knockout format. Twelve teams in the men´s category and five in the women´s category have registered for the tournament, states a press release issued by the organizer South Siders Basketball Club on Friday. In the league round, the top two teams from four different groups will advance into the quarterfinals in the men´s category while the top two teams in the women´s category will advance into the finals.
