Earlier, Shakya had defeated a Pilipino player 15-4 and then edged out a Malaysian player 12-8 en route to the final of the women´s 53 kg bout, according to University Sports Association Nepal (USAN)´s General Secretary Purna Singh Bohara. [break]
Another Nepali player Bishal Shrestha won bronze in the championship. Shrestha, who received a bye in the first round of men´s 58 kg category, defeated a Vietnamese player in the second round. However, Shrestha´s fairytale run came to an end and he had to settle for bronze after suffering a defeat at the hands of a Cambodian player in the next round.
According to USAN´s General Secretary Bohara, this is the first time in history that Nepal had secured medals in the Universiade games. “This victory was a historic success for us. It has given us a grest joy and has boosted our morale,” said Bohara. Olympian Deepak Bista was the coach of the three-member Nepali team.
Lama wins snooker title
KATHMANDU: Rajan Lama won the title of the First London Open Snooker Championship held in Kathmandu on Saturday. Lama defeated Prabin Shakya 7-3 in the final to claim a prize of Rs 100,000, the highest cash prize in any snooker event in Nepal. Shakya, who had entered the final after defeating national champion Saroj Mulmi in the semifinals, took a 3-1 lead but Lama clawed back in the game to win the championship organized by London Snooker House, Manbhavan. Lama also bagged a purse of Rs 15,000 for the highest break points of 72. Niraj Sinkhawal and Rajan Gurung were adjudged the best players. Altogehter 128 players had participated in the two-week long event, according to event manager Smith Lama.
