Speaker Ghimire stresses on the need to ensure effective delivery of parliament

KATHMANDU, July 22: Speaker Devraj Ghimire has advised speakers and deputy-speakers of provinces to focus on discussions and dialogues on the interests of the nation and people. He wanted them to make the operations of respective province assemblies effective and formulate appropriate laws.  

In his address to an interaction aiming to exchange practices of the federal parliament and province assemblies at Chandragiri, Kathmandu on Friday, the Speaker urged province assemblies to center on the maximum utilisation of federal democratic republic system for the cause of the people.

"International community is watching how Nepal's three-tier government practices and promotes parliamentary practices," he said, adding that the presence and deliveries of the parliament would depend on how its businesses are conducted.

He stressed that the parliament should focus on enacting laws in line with the Constitution and find a creative way to serve the people. 

National Assembly Chair Ganesh Prasad Timilsina advised the parliament to function impartially, abiding by the rule of law and in line with the international practices.

He urged lawmakers not to fall into the habit of solely prioritizing district visits and lobbying for increased budget allocations to their respective constituencies. "Lawmakers are expected to stress on carrying out the crucial responsibility of formulating laws by remaining present in the parliament, instead."

Bagmati Province Speaker Bhuwan Kumar Pathak insisted that there should be uniformity among the speaker and lawmakers in their roles, words and actions to make the parliamentary business vibrant.

Koshi Province Deputy Speaker Srijana Danuwar hoped that the gathering would be beneficial in identifying issues of respective provinces and unknot the hurdles.

The two-day gathering kicked off Friday is being attended by high-ranking officials, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Chair of the National Assembly, Deputy Speaker, Vice-Chair of the National Assembly, Speakers from all seven province assemblies, General Secretary of the Federal Parliament, Secretaries of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly, as well as the Secretaries of the Provincial Assemblies.
