KATHMANDU, March 18: Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Devraj Ghimire has made controversial allegations against the independent media.

Speaker Ghimire made irresponsible comments  against the dignity of his office on Friday as he addressed a delegation of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) that reached the Parliament Secretariat to meet him on Friday.

Ghimire said, "Journalists are not doing journalism as responsibly as they should have done. The practice of yellow journalism is equally alarming now. Whatever the reason, they [journalists] are biased. In other words, journalists are for sale."

Speaker Ghimire himself asked journalists not to speak outside their fraternity about such a situation. "You should not even say this because it is our internal matter," he said.

Stakeholders have seriously objected to the allegation arguing that Speaker Ghimire made low-level statements against the stature and dignity of his position. The FNJ has said that it is shameful that the speaker made such generalized accusations against journalists.

The FNJ office bearers have demanded that the Speaker either substantiate the allegation that journalists are on sale with facts or apologize for such irresponsible comments.
