The operation leading to the gold seizure took place at TIA on Wednesday. The DRI's team intercepted the gold, which was about to be smuggled in a taxi after clearing customs at the airport.
The arrest was made on-site at the airport customs office, with two individuals being apprehended immediately. In the subsequent hours, four more suspects were arrested. The investigation revealed that the gold had been brought into Nepal from Hong Kong. This marks the first instance of a seizure of such a large quantity of gold in Nepal.
Director-General Dhungana stated that further details are yet to be revealed, and efforts to locate the remaining fugitives are underway.
The seizure of such a large amount of gold was made based on specific information that the gold was concealed within the brake shoe of a scooter. Acting on this tip-off, a dedicated team from the Revenue Investigation Department conducted a targeted raid, resulting in the successful seizure of the gold.
