KATHMANDU, July 22: The Department of Customs has taken further action in response to the seizure of over 100 kg of gold that managed to pass inspection at the Tribhuvan International Airport Customs.
On Friday evening, Saroj Shrestha, the operator responsible for X-ray screening, was suspended in connection with the case, becoming the third employee to face the action. Prior to this, customs officer Santosh Chand and another official were suspended.
UML demands probe into the 100kg gold smuggling case
The gold, cleverly concealed within the brake shoes of motorcycles and scooters, was discovered during an operation carried out by the Revenue Investigation Department after receiving information that it had successfully passed the customs inspection and was about to exit the airport at 2 pm on Wednesday.
The confiscated gold had arrived in Kathmandu via Cathay Pacific flight on Tuesday. Law enforcement has made several arrests, including an Indian citizen, in connection with this significant case of gold smuggling.
