Sita's family unhappy with court's decision

BHOJPUR, April 23: The family of rape victim Sita Rai has of Bhojpur has expressed dissatisfaction over the verdict on her case issued by the Kathmandu District Court.



Police constable Parashuram Basnet of Department of Immigration had raped Rai, taking her to a capital-based Guesthouse following her arrival from Saudi Arabia where she was working.



A single bench of judge Bishnu Prasad Koirala on Monday sentenced Basnet to five years and six months in prison along with compensation of Rs. 50,000 to the victim, convicting him of the crime.



The family of Sita came to know about the court decision through telephone. Presently, the victim is living with her family in Bhojpur.



"I am disheartened that Nepal Government police personnel who are considered as the defender of the people played over the life of my daughter," said victim´s father.



When asked, he will appeal against the district court decision, he said he would take a further move after consultations with his well wishers and the people who helped the Rai family to fight for the justice to the victim.



In the final hearing, government attorney Juddha Bahadur Ale Magar, advocates Laxmi Rai and Indira Shrestha pleaded on behalf of the victim.



"I am not totally satisfied with the court decision, however, the crime has been established with the decision", said advocate Rai.
