KATHMANDU, Aug 28: Locals from Kakani obstructed the road connecting Kathmandu with Sisdole landfill site for ten hours Monday after a privately-owned garbage truck killed a local at Kagatigaun. According to the Metropolitan Police Post, Balaju, Padam Bahadur Balami, 49, of Kakani Rural Municipality-2 was killed by a tipper driven by Bishnu Magar at 6.45 in the morning.

The truck was transporting solid waste from Kathmandu to the Sisdole landfill site when the accident happened.  The locals had punctured the tires of the vehicle immediately after the accident. They obstructed the Tinpiple-Sisdole road for 10 hours.

The locals had refused to remove Balami’s body from the road until an agreement for compensation was reached. The Environment Division of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) informed that the road was opened after an agreement to pay Rs 3 million in compensation to the victim’s family. According to the chairperson of Kakani Rural Municipality-1 Chandra Bahadur Shrestha, the victim family had initially demanded Rs 5 million.

Head of Environment Division of KMC Hari Bahadur Kunwar said that the metropolis has taken the responsibility to ensure that the compensation is delivered to the victim’s family soon. He said, “An agreement was finally reached between the victim family and the truck owner to pay a compensation of Rs 3 million.”

The division had asked the representatives from the victim’s side and truck-owner Bharat Tamang to meet at Metropolitan Police Post in Balaju for negotiations, but the locals refused the request and the talks were held at Tinpiple itself.

Truck owner Tamang claimed that he reached the police post immediately after learning about the accident.
The road obstruction started from 7 am ended at 5 pm after the agreement was reached.
