Singh wraps up Nepal visit

KATHMANDU, Sept 15: Visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh returned home on Sunday, conveying a clear message to all political actors in Nepal that the southern neighbor wishes to see fresh election taking place on November 19.



During her meetings with top political leaders, head of the state and head of the government and Election Commission (EC) officials on Saturday and Monday, Singh also pledged all necessary support to help make the election a success. [break]



Addressing a press meet before wrapping up her two-day visit to Nepal, Singh said she was convinced that all the political actors in Nepal were prepared to hold fresh Constituent Assembly (CA) polls“ "This is something that we completely suppor”," she told media persons.



While Singh held separate meetings with Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala and CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal on Saturday evening, she also held meetings with President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, Chairman of Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi, Minister for Foreign and Home Affairs Madhav Prasad Ghimire, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and top EC officials on Sunday.



According to Maoist Chairman Dahal´s personal secretary Chudamani Khadka, Singh said holding election on the scheduled date would best serve the interest of Nepal and the Nepali people“ "India wishes to see political actors in Nepal holding the election as scheduled. Failure to hold the polls on the scheduled date may entail various complication”," Khadka quoted Singh as telling Dahal.



While thanking India for all its support to Nepal, Dahal on his part had told Singh that election was his mission and that he in the capacity of the chief of the largest political party was putting all his efforts to hold the polls on the scheduled date, Khadka said.



During the meeting held with her Nepali counterpart Arjun Bahadur Thapa earlier in the morning, Singh pledged delivery of 764 vehicles as agreed earlier so that they could be mobilized during the polls“ "India is ready to provide logistic support as agreed and make necessary arrangements for the security on the Indian side of the Nepal-India borde”," said a press statement issued by the foreign ministry.



The meeting also reviewed major issues of bilateral cooperation and matters of mutual interests.
