Polio vaccine to be administered to newborns 14 weeks after birth

KATHMANDU, Dec 27: The Ministry of Health and Population has changed the timing of administering FIPV vaccines against polio.

Sanjay Kumar Thakur , spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, said that the period of injecting polio vaccine has been changed on the advice of experts. According to him, earlier for children under one year old, two doses were given  - six weeks and 14 weeks after the birth - but now onward, the first dose will be provided at 14 weeks after birth and the second dose at nine months of age.


He also added that if children are not vaccinated at the age of one year, they can be vaccinated within five years. According to him, children within five years will receive two doses of the vaccine within a difference of four months.
