Shashidutta awards to Khadka, Rajopadhyay

KATHMANDU, Oct 2: Cricketers Paras Khadka and Nira Rajopadhyay, the skippers of the national men´s and women´s cricket teams, received the Shashidutta Pandey Memorial Fresh Player of the Year Award on Wednesday.



Shashidutta Pandey Memorial Trust, established in the memory of the late cricketer and cricket official Shashidutta Pandey by his family, picked Khadka and Rajopadhyay for their performances in the national and international events last year. [break]



Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) President Binay Raj Pandey and President of the Trust Kalyan Bhakta Panta handed over cash prize and certificate to Khadka. Likewise, wife of the late Pandey and Patron of the Trust Shanti Pandey and Shashidutta´s father Omkar Dutta Pandey handed over the award to Rajopadhyay.



Khadka and Rajopadhyay received Rs 5,000 each.



Nepal had won the title of the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 5, and reached the final of the ACC Trophy after eight years under the captainship of Khadka last year. He had given excellent performance during the tournaments.



Likewise, Region No 3 Kathmandu had completed their title hat-trick in the Pepsi National One-Day Tournament under Khadka´s leadership.



Meanwhile, Rajopadhyay had guided Region No 3 Kathmandu to title win in the Wai Wai Women´s National League. She had taken eight wickets and scored 117 runs during the tournament.



During the awards ceremony, President of the Trust Panta requested CAN to establish an award or a tournament in the memory of the late Pandey. CAN President Pandey said he was positive about the proposal and vowed to put the agenda in the board meeting.



Chief selector of the national team Bijay Sharma and CAN Vice-president Upendra Prasad Bhattarai shed light on the career of the late Pandey during the function.



The late Pandey had played in different national tournaments three decades ago and had taken charge as team manager several times until 2007. He had served CAN as member, treasurer and secretary. Pandey had also received the ICC Centenary Volunteer Award.



Pandey had passed away on August 8, 2009.
