The price of seasonal vegetables like local cauliflower, Tarai cauliflower, tomatoes, brinjal, potato, carrot, capsicum, radish have come down in range of Rs 12 to Rs 14 per kg in the Kalimati wholesale market - the largest vegetable market in the country.[break]
According to the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board (KFVMDB), prices of major seasonal vegetables have tumbled down due to rise in supplies from farms in neighboring district. Vegetables supply in the Kalimati market has increased to around 600 tons a day, up from average daily supplies of 350 tons, officials of the board said.
Bharat Rijal, a vegetables wholesaler at Kalimati market, said sufficient supply amid rise in production in local farms is the major reason behind drop in prices. “Prices of seasonal vegetables have come down because of improved supplies from farms in Chitwan, Kavre, Makwanpur and Sarlahi,” Rijal told Republica on Wednesday.
Wholesale price of big tomato and small tomato dropped to Rs 23 per kg from last week´s Rs 27 per kg and Rs 20 per kg respectively. Similarly, the price of red potato has also decline to Rs 19 per kg from Rs 21 per kg recorded a week ago. Price of local cauliflower has dropped from last week´s Rs 30 per kg to Rs 20 per kg.
Other vegetables seeing drop in prices were bitter gourd and broccoli. While price of bitter ground by Re 1 per kg, making it Rs 34 per kg, broccoli is currently priced Rs 50 per kg, down from Rs 61 per kg recorded a week ago.
“Sharp fall in price has also been seen in French bean. On Wednesday, French bean was sold for Rs 39 per kg, down from last week´s Rs 61 per kg.
Prices of ginger and leafy vegetables have remained unchanged.
