KATHMANDU, Aug 6: Senior-most Justice at the Supreme Court, Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, took charge of the judiciary as acting chief justice on Sunday.

Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki retired from service on Saturday.

Assuming the office as the acting chief justice, Shrestha directed his subordinates to carry out responsibilities smoothly by taking into account the constitution and law. He informed that he would hold discussion with justices and formulate immediate and long-term plans to settle the cases on time.

He however urged all sides concerned including all justices and judicial administration for the reform in judiciary. Shrestha has already been recommended as the 31st CJ by the Constitutional Council.

Although the parliamentary hearings committee has already endorsed Shrestha as the new CJ, there is a constitutional provision for the president to appoint the CJ, for which it will take some time.

Shrestha will head the judiciary till October 2024. He had embarked on judicial service since becoming a legal officer and then getting promoted to district judge and high court judge.
