KATHMANDU, Dec 30: Veteran Nepali litterateur and chairman of Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya Kamal Mani Dixit, who made important contribution to Nepali literature, died on Thursday morning. He was at 87.
The long-serving master of Nepali literature breathed his last in Lalitpur. He was suffering from respiratory-related problems since a few days. Dixit has played a pivotal role in uplifting Nepali literature, with the publications of more than six dozens of books in addition to numerous short stories and essays.
Born in August 1929 in Gairidhara, Kathmandu, Dixit was involved in various social activities. Dixit, the second child of Kedar Mani Acharya and Bidhya Devi Dixit, founded the Madan Puraskar and Madan Puraskar Guthi in 2012 BS with the aim of enriching and archiving Nepali literature. The Guthi has been annually providing Madan Puraskar to best Nepali writers since 2045 BS.
Besides the Guthi, Dixit was also associated with Madan Memorial School, Sajha Prakashan, Gorkhapatra Sansthan, Rotary Club, BP Koirala Memorial Museum among others.
Various litterateurs, political party leaders and well wishers extended their condolence to the bereaved family on the demise of Dixit. They expressed their grief and sorrow remembering the prominent contributions of Dixit. They were unanimous in saying that Dixit's demise was an irreparable loss to Nepali literature.
He was cremated at the electronic crematorium at Pashupati Aryaghat on Thursday morning.
Dixit is survived by two sons -- Kanak Mani and Kunda -- and a daughter, Rupa Joshi. Both of his sons are established journalists and Joshi is well known for her writing as well.
