Altogether 2,460 police personnel will be deployed under a Special Security Operation that kicked in Tuesday evening on a trial basis, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jaya Bahadur Chand, who is also chief of the Metropolitan Police Range. [break]
Chand, speaking at a press conference, said the plan has been announced in view of the approaching festival season and aims at minimizing black marketing and social crime, controlling hooliganism, illegal use of weapons and drugs and prostitution.
“We are very hopeful of [positive results] from the change in the existing security modality," SSP Chand said.
Under the plan, Kathmandu District has been divided into six different sectors within and outside the ring road each of which will be patrolled from midnight to 4 a.m by a vehicle team of seven police personnel under an inspector.
Each sector is to collect and analyze information, identify people involve in crime, raid suspect areas and make arrests. Police have worked out the command structure, number of police to be deployed, logistics and other details.
Under a long term plan, surprise checks will be carried out in dance and disco centers, pool houses, hotels and lodges, massage parlors, CD/DVD shops, cyber cafés and taverns by mobile teams and CRV patrols.
Addressing the press conference, Chudamani Sharma, Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, said the operation will seek maximum outcome with the effective mobilization of limited resources. The operation also aims to create strong bonds between the public and police and discourage black marketing and hoarding, he added.
Use of sniffer dogs at different entry points, anti-drink drive operations especially on Fridays and Saturdays, investigation and arrest of absconding criminals and monitoring of people released from jail will be part of the operation, according to the police.
At least 2,460 policeman will be deployed every day for the operation.
