School-level special sports kicks off

KATHMANDU, June 20: Soon after organizing two school level sporting events -- President´s Shield and Junior School Sports Championship -- National Sports Council (NSC) has organized special sports at the school level for differently-abled players. The 18th School-level National Special Sports kicked off Thursday at the Dasharath Stadium, Kathmandu. [break]



Kopila Kumal of Tanahun stole the show during the curtain raiser claiming twin golds. Kumal bagged gold in girl´s 100 m and 200 m sprint without crutches while physically-challenged Rita Chizwal of Dang and Apsara Pandey of Tanahun bagged silver and bronze respectively in the 100 m while Pandey of Tanahun and Karishma Chaudhary of Kailali stood second and third.



Amar Rai of Dharan claimed gold in fully blind softball throw of U-15 boy´s category coming ahead of Radheshyam Chaudhary of Banke and Umesh Dhimal of the eastern region.



In the physically-challenged boy´s 200 m race without crutches, Munna Sunuwar of Sarlahi, Bhisma Kumal of Tanahun and Bijay Chaudhary of Kailali secured top three positions.



Laxmi Maharjan of Kathmandu secured first position in girl´s long jump for partially deaf while Shanti Thanet of Gorkha and Dashimaya Khanal of Kaski secured second and third positions. In 100 m sprint for partially deaf Sangam Pakhrin of Kathmandu, Suraj Khadka of Gorkha and Devendra Saru of Bhairahawa secured top three positions.



Ghana Darlami of Surkhet, Sarita Aryal of Kathmandu and Madhumaya Paudel of Chitwan claimed top three honors in girl´s 50 m race for fully blind. In the girl´s 50 m race for partially blind Sapana Chaudhary of Banke, Paru Rishal of Kathmandu and Hita Gurung of Kaski secured top three spots.



Tej Bahadur Gharti of Kathmandu claimed gold in wheelchair 100 m sprint for boys coming ahead of Chet Bahadur KC of Dang and Dinesh Khatri of Kathmandu.



Under deaf girl´s 200 m race, Sunita Tamang and Sapana Chakradhar of Kathamndu won gold and silver respectively while Shanti Thanet of Gorkha remained satisfied with bronze.



Earlier, Minister for Youth and Sports Ram Kumar Shrestha inaugurated the event. Altogether 302 differently-abled players including 93 in blind, 107 in physically-challenged and 102 in deaf category are participating in the event.





Nagarik off to winning start



KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Nagarik Daily, sister publication of Republica Daily, started with a winning note in the Sixth Virgin Media Cup on Thursday being held at the Buddhibikash grounds, Lagankhel. Nagarik defeated Himalayan Television 3-0 in the tiebreaker following goalless tie in the regulation time. Nagarik custodian Rajesh Tiwari was declared the-man-of-the-match.



In other matches, Karobar Daily, Channel Nepal, TTV and Nepal Television emerged victorious. Karabor Daily defeated Gorkhapatra 1-0 with the winning goal coming from Santosh Chaudhary. Channel Nepal thumped Sagarmatha Television 4-0. Raj Thapa netted twice while Pasang Yonjan Lama and Anil Shrestha were also on scoresheet for Channel Nepal. Prakash Tamsaling and Avash Ghimire scored one goal each for TTV as it defeated Kantipur Television 2-0. Nepal Television defeated Ujyalo Network 2-0. Basudev Awal scored both the goals for winning side.
