At a press meet in the capital on Tuesday, NHA President Tej Gurung said representatives of seven countries including host Nepal, India, Pakistan Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Yemen will participate in the meeting. The meeting will also be attended by Abu AL Lail of Kuwait, the executive director of Asian Handball Federation (AHF). [break]
According to Gurung, the meeting will discuss ideas and chalk out strategies for the development and promotion of handball in the underdeveloped countries. This is the first time Nepal is hosting an international meeting of handball associations.
Gurung also vowed to take handball to greater heights. "Handball can be played in an area of 40X20m.” Handball had been introduced in Nepal in 2038 BS and Nepal had won a few international medals in the 40s, said Gurung. But the handball association has remained inactive for a decade now. The current handball committee was elected about 10 months ago.
Gurung also revealed that Nepal had won preliminary bidding for hosting the South Central Asian Zone Handball Tournament to be held in December. However, it is yet to be decided if Nepal will get to host the event.
"The venue for tournament will be disclosed two months prior to the tournament. Support from government, including the sports ministry and the National Sports Council will be vital in Nepal´s bid for hosting the tournament."
The tournament will be contested by 300 players from eight countries. The tournament will feature boys´ events in U-21 age group and girls´ event in U-20 age group.
