KATHMANDU, Aug 13: The Supreme Court has ordered a written explanation from former prime ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal and Baburam Bhattarai, as well as the Special Court and the Attorney General's Office on land embezzlement case related to Lalita Niwas.
Hearing a writ petition filed by senior advocate Balkrishna Neupane seven years ago, the full bench of Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma, justices Binod Sharma and Sunil Kumar Pokharel on Thursday ordered the concerned to come up with a written response.

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had filed a case in the Special Court on February 5, 2020 against 175 people on charges of involvement in the Lalita Niwas land embezzlement. However, the anti-graft body didn’t file cases against the then prime ministers Nepal and Bhattarai, who led the Council of Ministers, at the time of the land embezzlement.
Senior advocate Neupane in his writ petition filed on February 12, 2020 had sought reasons from the CIAA as to why it did not file graft cases against the former prime ministers.
Three cases related to this issue were pending in the Supreme Court. Although the legal process of two of them has already been completed, the court is yet to take any decision as it has decided to hear all three cases together, while an order has been issued to seek a written response from the opponent in the first main case.
