KATHMANDU, Nov 26: The Supreme Court (SC) has summoned the opposition in the case filed by former officials of the Tax Settlement Commission, who were convicted of corruption by the Special Court.
A bench of Justices Manoj Kumar Sharma and Nripdhwaj Niraula has summoned the parties named as respondents by them and instructed them to proceed with the hearing process of the case.
"Tax Settlement Commission itself was against law"
The Special Court had sentenced Lumba Dhwaj Mahat, Chairman of the Tax Settlement Commission, member Chudamani Sharma, and Chudamani Sharma, who served as the Member Secretary and then Director General of the Inland Revenue Department, to nine years of imprisonment.
The Special Court had ordered them to pay a total of Rs 6.16 billion in compensation and fines.
After they were unable to pay the amount for bail, they were imprisoned. Later, claiming that they were unlawfully detained, they filed a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court. After hearing their petition, the Supreme Court summoned the other party in the case as well.
