KATHMANDU, April 18: A writ petition was filed at the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday against the Tribhuvan University (TU)´s recent decision to bar student leaders above the age of 28 from contesting free student union elections.

Student leaders from 14 campuses, including Nepal Law Campus, Padma Kanya Campus and Tri Chandra Campus moved the apex court arguing that the TU´s decision does not have any legal ground. [break]

They have maintained that the age limit for students contesting student union election should be removed as there is no age limit for continuing one´s studies. A meeting of TU senate on April 5 had decided to amend the provision that allowed candidates to contest in student elections, irrespective of their age.

Chairman of Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi has been made a defendant in the writ petition.
