The SC ordered the verdict acting on a writ petition filed which claims that half of the road section lies inside Bardiya National Park (BNP) and hence endangers the fragile ecosystem of the park. The construction of the road had begun on September 11 this year.[break]
The SC´s order has risked more than Rs 30 million that the Surkhet-based Road Division Office-4 and the Nepalgunj-based Road Division Office-3 have spent so far in developing the track road. Only 6 km track road from Bardiya to Surkhet and 5 km track from Surkhet to Bardiya stillremains to be completed.
The road that has faced stiff opposition from environment activists for allegedly endangering the eco-system of BNP has already had its Environment Impact (EIA) approved by the Ministry of Environment (MoE). “People have been forced to suffer longer for the sake of protecting environment,” said Billi Ram Giri, coordinator of a concern group for the Bhurigaun-Telpani road.
With the completion of the Bhurigaun-Telpani road, the distance between Birendrangar of Surkhet and Bhurigaun of Bardiya would be reduced by around 75 kilometers.
