Sahabir Memorial Lawn Tennis kicks off

KATHMANDU, March 26: Previous edition's runner-up Jitendra Pariyar set about his Seventh Sahabir Memorial Open Lawn Tennis Championship campaign with a perfect 6-0 and 6-0 win over MB Timour at the Armed Police Force headquater in Halchowk, Kathmandu on Wednesday.

In other men's singles events, Shakti Sharma, Suraj Thapa, Milan Rokkaya, Chhewang Lama, Anil Shahi, Kamal Bhandari, Akash Lamkhor, Abhishek Bastola and Dawa Sherpa won their respective matches.


Shakti registered a 3-6, 6-4 and 6-4 win over Bikash Khadka, Suraj edged past Pranaya Karki 6-4, 3-6 and 6-1, Milan saw off Antony Rai 6-1 and 6-0, Chhewang completed a 6-1 and 6-1 win over Anil Century, Anil defeated Gaurav Shahi 6-1 and 6-1, Kamal thumped Sanjay Shrestha 6-0 and 6-0 and Dawa outclassed Prakash Chand 6-0 and 6-0.

Meanwhile, Santosh Khatri, Subrata Basnet, Shriyans Karki, Bibek Sherstha and Rajkumar Lama got walkover from their respective opponents.

Altogether 270 players, including 21 women, are participating in this year's edition. The total cash award of the tournament is Rs 500,000, with winners in the men's and women's singles taking home Rs 60,000 each. First and second runners-up in both categories will earn Rs 30,000 and 20,000 respectively.

Likewise, winners in the men's and women's doubles will bag Rs 40,000 while first and second runners-up will earn Rs 20,000. Winners in the mixed-doubles will earn Rs 40,000 while first and second runners-up will take home Rs 20,000 each.

The championship comprises of men and women singles and doubles, mixed doubles, singles and doubles for civil servants and singles and doubles for veterans above 35, 45, 55 and 65 years and above.

In other matches held on the opening day, the team of Jitendra and Sriyansh Karki registered a 6-0 and 6-0 win over the pair of Hari Sharma and Prashant Shrestha in the men's doubles as pair of Dawa Sherpa and Abhishek Bastola beat a team of Arjun Gurung and Bikash Khadka 6-0 and 6-1 and pair of Bishwo Shrestha and Sanjay Shrestha registered a 6-1 and 6-1 victory against the pair of Akash Lama and Shyam GC. Team of Shrreram Ranamagar and Ganesh Karki received walkover from their opponent.
