MAKWANPUR, Dec 1: Until recently the women of Tamang and Majhi community in two remote villages of Makwanpur district didn´t know how to introduce themselves in front of unknown visitors, share their problems and fight social evils.

But gone are those day as they have changed for the better now.[break]

Empowered by a program, the women of Rajgau and Phaparbari unhesitantly speak in public against social evils and share their problems. Bringing about change in them was all possible by Women Skill Development Centre (WSKC).

The women´s organisation has been running a women´s empowerment programme. WSKC has set up 89 debate centers in the district to help women identify the necessity of community, fight social evils and empower them.

Women from the Tamang community gather at Phulbari women debate centre at Raigau-4 three times in a month and hold discussion to end social malpractices such as alcoholism and gambling as wells ways to be self-reliant.

"Those who used to idle away time earlier by drinking and playing cards are not working for the development of community," said Phulbari centre´s Sangita Rai.

In Raigau alone, WSKC has mobilised 493 facilitators setting up 19 debate centers.
