KATHMANDU, Aug 6: Police said they would prosecute 16 members of Rastriya Samamukti Sena (RSS) who were arrested at Thankot on Friday while heading en masse to the capital in combat fatigues. Among the arrested was Shyam Lama, purportedly the ´commander in chief´ of the so-called militant outfit.

“As they seem to have formed a military group and even issued identity cards accordingly, we will primarily prosecute them under public offence charges,” said Superintendent of Police (SP) Ramesh Kharel, chief of Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu.

The RSS members were reportedly planning to stage a sit-in in front of the Constituent Assembly building at New Baneshwar to protest against the latter´s failure to elect a new prime minister. “We were told that there would be around members like us in combat dress picketing the CA building,” they told the police during interrogations.

The RSS was formed on April 27, 2010 with one Thakur Chandra Gahatraj as its president. It had been sheltering its members at a rented house in Salyantar, Dhading. According to police sources, the police headquarters was informed about it ever since the RSS members took shelter there.

The arrested members said that they were told to remain prepared for a stir for the interests of Dalits but denied taking any military training.

They said that the RSS, having been established recently, had limited network in Kaski, Syangja, Baglung and Sarlahi districts.
