KATHMANDU, Nov 6: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane has said that party leaders and cadres are increasingly aspiring to secure high-ranking political positions.
Speaking at a programme in Chitwan on Friday, he said that no one in the party seemed interested in becoming a ward chairperson, with everyone aspiring to become a mayor, provincial assembly member or secure other senior positions at once.
“Our people are not interested in ward chairperson positions. They want to contest for mayor or look higher up; they do not want to look down. At this rate, I might have to resign and contest for ward chairperson myself just to get someone to run in a ward election,” he remarked sarcastically.
Aspiring candidates eyeing only higher positions
Lamichhane urged party leaders and cadres to demonstrate high political standards, saying the 182 seats secured through the people's mandate should be used to serve them rather than to display arrogance of power.
He also said party leaders and cadres should not exert political pressure on the administration or police. He said it would be wrong to misuse state machinery to take revenge for the political retaliation they had faced in the past.
“We must give up the arrogance that we have become a big party and that the police, chief district officers and everything else are now in our hands,” he said.
Stating that society was closely observing the party's activities and conduct, Lamichhane said attacking those who criticise the party was not appropriate political behaviour.
He also stressed the need to end infighting within the party over opportunities, adding that a 'Candidate Club' method had been adopted for candidate selection to ensure a transparent process.
