RSP lawmaker Shah questions if resignations are used to cleanse corruption charges

“Meanwhile, other current and former ministers whose names were also heard in the same audio are reportedly being protected by invisible forces. Are there separate laws for them? Are they exempt from investigation?” he asked.

KATHMANDU, Aug 4: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Ashim Shah has questioned whether ministers accused of corruption can evade investigation simply by resigning from their posts.

Speaking during Monday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Shah criticized what he described as a troubling new trend. “What kind of new tradition is this?” he asked. “An audio clip alleging corruption surfaces, proof of bribe solicitation comes out, and then the minister resigns—and just like that, all sins are washed away. Has resignation now become a sacred dip in the Ganges that absolves one of corruption crimes?”

Shah cited the case of the then Minister Rajkumar Gupta, who resigned following allegations, after which the investigation file was closed. “Meanwhile, other current and former ministers whose names were also heard in the same audio are reportedly being protected by invisible forces. Are there separate laws for them? Are they exempt from investigation?” he asked.
